How to tackle your child’s habit of not doing homework
Nothing can be more embarrassing than getting a complaint note from your child’s teachers, stating that he/she does not complete homework in time.
Such a remark not only disturbs the students and makes him feel inferior to his classmates who have their homework completed in time always, but also raises questions on the parenting of the child’s parents, who apparently do not help him to complete his homework!
Parents, however, know that there is another side to this story. They know that their kids were simply procrastinating and no matter how much they tried to help them to complete their assigned tasks, the latter would simply not listen and continue to do things that interest them.
A lot of parents face this issue on a daily basis, but they don’t understand how to solve this problem, and how to do away with their child’s habit of procrastination. Here are a few points that you could keep in mind, which would help you in making your child complete his/her homework every day without fail. Read on to know more.
Set a specific time for homework
The first thing that you should do is set a specific time for each day, wherein your child must only complete his/her child. And make sure that he/she follows this time table seriously. An hour in the evening is a good time to set, when your child would have forgotten about school stress and would have got some time to relax. This way, over a period of a few days, your child would grow used to the schedule, and will start improving in studies drastically.
Reward your child
Parents are under the fall impression that being strict and scolding kids would make them do their homework. This is far away from the actual truth. If parents continue this habit of scolding persistently, their kids would become frustrated, and would hate their homework hour. In fact, they would start to make excuses to skip doing their homework, or try to do it without your guidance and then end up doing it incorrectly.
It is better if you stop being strict and reward your child instead. This could be as simple as allowing your child an hour of play time after he/she completes the prescribed homework, or some kind of gift. This will make your child feel motivated, and encourage him/her to finish the homework as soon as possible.
Be an inspiration for your child
Parents are the first role model for their child in most cases. Therefore, be conscious of the way you act around your child, and be sure that you inspire him/her. Try doing some of your office work in front of the child, when he/she is attempting his homework. This might inspire your child to do homework every day.
Make sure that the atmosphere is apt for studies
Kids do not have a long attention span, and can get distracted very easily. It is thus the parents’ responsibility to create an ideal atmosphere for the child. Do not use your phone, talk to other family members or watch the television until your child completes the homework.
